CNC Benchtop Lathe
Feb. 2016 - May 2016
In a team of 5, with Prof. Martin Culpepper
Elements of Mechanical Design, Dept of Mechanical Eng, MIT
Description
-
In this project, our team developed and fabricated a benchtop lathe with CNC functionality in X and Z axes. The primary functional requirement of the lathe was it should be able to turn different materials including steel and aluminum with 50um precision. The design of the lathe was very exciting with the use of multiple flexures in different components to provide desired directional stiffnesses.
-
I was responsible for the majority of modeling, design analysis, and fabrication. I performed design and analysis of spindle, and x and z-feed drive mechanisms through parametric models.
-
I created an analytical model for cutting forces and deformations. An error budget was also developed to keep track of the errors induced by different deformations due to forces and temperature.
-
For the manufacture, I created 2D drawings with proper GD&T, and performed machining operations on a mill and lathe for different parts of the lathe.
