FEM of Ultrasonic Guided Waves

May 2011 - July 2011

Intern, Non-Destructive Evaluation Lab

GE Global Research, Bangalore, India

Description

  • I worked on online inspection technology based on Ultrasonic Guided Waves to detect defects in pipes with long and sharp bends.

  • Finite Element modeling of straight and curved pipe geometries was used to develop a methodology to derive characteristics of the ultrasonic waves, to facilitate the experiments and testing to detect pipe defects.

  • The methodology was used for prediction of behavior in complex geometries like curved pipes. Various pipe configurations were analyzed to relate external and internal defect detection for different bend radii.
